ONE DAY TRIP TO LOST KINGDOM OF KOH KER

One-Day VIP Tour: Discovering the Lost Kingdom of Koh Ker

Venture deep into the Cambodian countryside to explore Koh Ker, the short-lived 10th-century capital of the Khmer Empire. Once swallowed by the jungle and shrouded in mystery, this remote archaeological site offers a raw, crowd-free alternative to the main Angkor park. It is a journey back in time, filled with overgrown ruins and striking architectural marvels.

Trip Highlights

  • Prasat Thom (The Great Pyramid): Marvel at the spectacular 7-tiered, 36-meter-high sandstone pyramid that looks entirely distinct from any other Mayan-like structure in Southeast Asia. You can climb to the top for a breathtaking, panoramic view of the surrounding forest landscape.

  • The Overgrown Sanctuaries: Walk among ruins tightly embraced by giant tree roots, offering a serene, Indiana Jones-style atmosphere without the massive crowds.

  • Diverse Temple Ruins: Discover unique artistic designs and gigantic stone carvings hidden away across the countryside.

Suggested Itinerary

  • Morning: Journey into the Countryside Depart from your hotel early in the morning for a scenic 2.5-hour drive (approx. 130 km) northeast of Siem Reap. The drive offers a glimpse into authentic Cambodian rural life, passing through local villages and beautiful countryside.

  • Mid-Morning: Exploring the Koh Ker Group Upon arrival, dive into the main highlights of the nearly 100 ruined temples in the area:

    • Prasat Pram: Five brick towers spectacularly draped in the strangling roots of sacred fig trees.

    • Prasat Neang Khmao: The "Black Lady" temple, featuring a uniquely weathered dark facade.

    • Prasat Damrei: The "Elephant Temple," home to beautiful, well-preserved stone elephant guards.

    • Prasat Chen: The "Chinese Temple," historically famous as the discovery site of major ancient sculptures.

    • Prasat Linga: Sanctuaries housing impressively massive stone lingas (sacred symbols).

  • Lunch Break Enjoy a relaxing lunch break at noon at a local restaurant nearby the temples, savoring traditional Cambodian dishes.

  • Afternoon: The Great Pyramid & Return Dedicate your afternoon to the crowning jewel, Prasat Thom. Take your time exploring the surrounding complex and climbing up to the peak to take in the endless jungle views. Conclude the day with a comfortable drive back to your hotel.
